How ZChat Works: Under the Cryptographic Hood

An accurate, code-verified explanation of our WebRTC transport architecture, ephemeral signaling coordination, encryption guarantees, and operational trust boundaries.

1. The Non-Technical Overview: 4 Simple Steps

For non-technical users, ZChat operates with total simplicity:

Step 1: Open Tab No App Install

Open zchat.live in any web browser. You are immediately assigned an ephemeral session identity without ever entering an email, phone number, or password.

Step 2: Share Secret Link Encrypted Ticket

Click to generate a one-time invite ticket or a timed burner room. Send the link to your friend or trading counterparty.

Step 3: Direct Connection P2P WebRTC

Our signaling coordinator facilitates a quick handshake, and then steps out of the way. All messages and media stream directly between both devices.

Step 4: Automatic Burn Zero Logs

When you close your tab or the burner room timer expires, browser memory flushes completely. No conversation logs exist anywhere on Earth.

2. The Engineering Breakdown: WebRTC & Ephemeral Signaling

To understand why ZChat is structurally different from traditional cloud messengers, let us trace how packets move through our systems:

Phase A: Local Session Initialization (In-Browser) Live

When a user loads ZChat, the client code generates a cryptographically secure random session UUID and sets up local WebRTC objects. No database record is created, and no user tracking tokens are stored in browser cookies.

Phase B: Ephemeral Signaling Handshake (WebSocket) Live

Because browsers behind residential routers and cellular firewalls cannot spontaneously discover each other’s internal IP addresses, they connect to an ephemeral Node.js signaling server hosted at z-backend-acpe.onrender.com.

What the Signaling Server Sees vs. Cannot See

The Server Sees: Connecting client IP addresses, TCP handshake timestamps, rate-limiting counters, and session negotiation payloads (SDP offers/answers and ICE candidate network mappings).

The Server CANNOT See: Chat text, images, transferred files, or audio/video streams. It does not hold private decryption keys and operates zero database tables for messages.

Phase C: Direct Peer-to-Peer Data Transport Live

Once the SDP exchange concludes, the browsers establish a direct, peer-to-peer SCTP DataChannel layered on top of Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS). Data packets travel directly from peer A to peer B over the internet, completely bypassing the signaling server.

Phase D: STUN & TURN NAT Traversal Live

If both peers reside behind strict corporate firewalls or symmetric NATs, direct P2P packet transmission may be impossible. In those situations, WebRTC falls back to an encrypted TURN relay (provided by Cloudflare Calls or Metered.live). In relay mode, data remains encrypted end-to-end via DTLS; the relay merely forwards encrypted UDP packets without ability to inspect content.

3. Operational Security & Realistic Trust Boundaries

Threat Model Transparency: What Users Must Understand

We refuse to publish deceptive marketing claims. Here are the genuine cryptographic boundaries of WebRTC:

  • Peer IP Exposure: Establishing a direct peer-to-peer connection requires your browser to share network packets directly with your peer’s public IP address. Unless you route through a VPN or Tor proxy, your counterparty can observe your IP address.
  • Local Device Security: If your local computer has malware, an active screen recorder, or physical surveillance over your shoulder, encryption cannot protect you.
  • Signaling Metadata: While the signaling coordinator does not log or store messages, your internet service provider (ISP) can observe that you initiated a WebSocket connection to the signaling domain unless you use a VPN.

4. Web3 Integration & Token Architecture

ZChat synthesizes peer-to-peer encrypted communications with decentralized Web3 economic rails on Polygon PoS:

  • Polygon Token Contract: Verified ERC-20 utility token contract pre-deployed on Polygon PoS at address 0x9D9fefb494EA7cc2a3FE18D8CEF3dD198c172bEE with a strict 100,000,000 fixed supply Live.
  • Multi-Chain Escrow Smart Contracts: Production-grade 2-of-2 timelocked escrow contracts designed to settle OTC trades in POL, USDT, and USDC with automated timeout refund paths Planned (Phase 3, Q1–Q2 2027).
  • Community Relay Node Mining: Incentivized bandwidth relay runner clients that decentralize signaling and reward operators in $ZCHAT tokens Planned (Phase 3, Q1–Q2 2027).
